Straddling the Mississippi River where it joins the Minnesota River, Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota and home to around 411,000 residents. For higher education, Minneapolis is home to the University of Minnesota as well as a number of excellent smaller colleges and universities, including Augsburg College, Minneapolis College of Art and Design and Minnesota Community and Technical College.

There are a number of Fortune 500 companies in Minneapolis and it is the second largest commercial center in the Midwest, behind Chicago. Among the companies headquarters in Minneapolis are Target, US Bancorp and Xcel Energy. The City of Minneapolis owns and maintains more than 50 parks, walking trails, recreation centers and green spaces, including Minnehaha Regional Park, Calhoun Park in the Uptown district and Boom Island Park. In fact, more than 16 percent of the land in the city is park land. Facilities include swimming pools, ball parks, picnic grounds, pet parks and children's playgrounds. Minneapolis parks also tie into the green spaces that line both shores of the Mississippi River.
